We are so excited to be partnering with SGW Lab for our ‘KANKAN Creates series’ this Christmas. We have long admired their beautiful ceramics. Get to know a little more about the creative talent behind SGW, Yuta Segawa. Thanks Yuta for taking part!
Tell us a little about where you live, who you live with and why this is important to you.
I live alone near the Earlsfield train station. I have lived in the same flat for 3 years. It is a convenient place because it is close to the studio and there are cafes and shops nearby.
What does home mean to you?
Home is the place for me to relax. It's about a 10-minute walk from the studio, but when I get home, I can naturally get away from work and relax.
When you are looking for a new home, what is the one thing that is a must-have?
It is important to be close to the workplace. It would be nice if there was a delicious coffee cafe nearby. I'm looking forward to buying coffee before going to work.
What made you end up in the career you have?
I've always loved ceramics and have continued to do so.
If money, skills, experiences or time weren’t a factor - what job would you do?
I want to do the same job.
What is the best part of your job?
I am impressed when a new work is completed or when a pottery with an interesting texture or color is created by chance.
What is the one luxury that money can’t buy?
Impressed when the work that I was satisfied with was completed.
Favourite smell and why
Coffee. It makes me feel happy and motivated.
What’s your 2021 sustainable pledge you’ve made?
We review the packaging of our work and use as much recyclable material as possible.
What is the first place you recommend to visitors that are coming to town?
British museum. I came from Japan and was amazed at the richness of the collection. I visited once a month before Covid pandemic.
